Wintertime Citrus at the Co-op
Though it may be grey outside, our shelves are bursting with bright and beautiful colors from the full array of local and regional citrus. The following department picks will be sure to bring some life and vigor into your winter.
Local Blood Oranges- $1.69/lb- These gorgeous dark-fleshed oranges have a sweet flavor with a tart bite, and make excellent additions to creative recipes such as fennel, blood orange, and olive oil salads. The dark color of blood oranges come from the presence of anthocyanin, an antioxidant that helps fight off winter time sicknesses.
Cara Cara Navels- $1.69/lb – A hybrid orange discovered at the Hacienda de Cara Cara in Valencia, Venezuela, the Cara is believed to be a cross between the Washington Navel and the Brazilian Bahia Navel. The flavor is more complex than most navel varieties and has been described as evoking notes of cherry, rose petal, orange, and blackberry. These are amazing oranges.
Mellow Gold Grapefruit-$1.49/lb- The Mellow Gold is a cross between the Oro Blanco grapefruit and a Pumelo. This is the grapefruit for people who don’t like grapefruit. It is very sweet with a yellow green flesh and low acidity. Great for juicing or eating right out of the rind.
Along with these department picks we also have seasonal local Murcott Mandarins, Local Navels, California Meyer Lemons, and Minneola Tangelos with more to come soon!
